We go out of our way to reach out-of-the-way places...

World in Need remembers the people that most organizations have forgotten. We feed children that nobody else can. We build projects where nobody else bothers. And working with local leaders, we bring hope to regions too dangerous for others. With your help we can empower the children, families and communities that have nowhere else to turn.

World In Need, USA is part of the World in Need International family of non-profit, humanitarian relief and development agencies committed to providing relief for hunger, suffering, poverty and oppression. We go out of our way to focus on areas of the world often forgotten about by other relief organizations.
  • Some people are just too far away.
  • Some communities are just too small to get noticed.
  • Some regions are in conflict and too dangerous to visit.

In 1991, World In Need was once of the few agencies to care about the plight of the Kurds in the mountains of Iraq who were being gassed and killed. Aid is still going to these people, and today our work has expanded to over 22 countries.

World in Need is able to help in circumstances often too difficult for other organizations because instead of imposing our own people and values on a community in need, we work with local community leaders directly. Local leaders who are well known, respected and often loved within their communities become World in Need representatives right in their own backyards.

In each country the World In Need operation is an independent, self-sustaining organization with its own board. Where possible, it is registered with its own government as an NGO.

This “home-grown” approach empowers poverty-stricken people and communities from within, so that local people, families and businesses worldwide can work together to create self-sustaining communities.

6 Levels of Assistance

1. Emergency Aid – Help with the immediate physical needs of people who may be hurt, sick or starving. This includes emergency relief supplies, providing food and shelter for orphans and poor families, and providing medical supplies along with basic health to get these communities out of emergency or survival situations quickly.

2. Continuing Support – Once the most urgent needs are taken care of, there is still plenty of critical needs to deal with. This includes post-war reconstruction, providing education, dealing with AIDS and substance abuse, encouraging income generation rather than dependence and providing funds for local workers.

3. Emotional Support – Even after physical needs are stabilized, people in areas wrought with violence are still facing severe trauma brought on by war, the loss of a loving family support system, cultural and religious oppression and substance abuse.

4. Cultural Assistance – After a traumatic period, many people and communities no longer have mutual trust, resulting in social upheaval. Social and cultural education is needed to promote social trust and local communities need support to respond to social needs.

5 Training & Education – In order to help build lasting results, all these changes must come from within. People may need to learn everything from basic literacy to cultural and religious understanding...from practical job skills to management solutions.

6. Building Social Networks – In today’s world, in order for a community to truly prosper, it needs more than relief from internal problems - it needs to interact successfully with the world around it. At this stage it is necessary to reach beyond community, regional and cultural borders to develop cooperation and with neighboring communities and countries – and ultimately the rest of the world.
